Yehuda Katz was born on July 18, 1959 in Ramat Gan, Israel. His parents, Yosef and Sarah, are Holocaust survivors.
After completing high school Yehuda chose to do his military service in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Hesder framework, which combines religious studies and army service. Yehuda split his time between religious studies at *Yeshivat Kerem Be'yavne, and the I.D.F. Armored Corps.
Yehuda's parents, justifiably shared his dream of practicing one day as a leading Judaic scholar and rabbinic figure in the field of education, bringing along his talent and previous experience with youth.
In June 1982 those dreams were displaced by the nightmare of Sultan Yaqub. Once the war in Lebanon brokeout, Yehuda was called for active military duty. Yehuda was sent into battle at Sultan Yaqub just 10 days before his scheduled release from the army. Up until the time Yehuda went missing, he supported his friends with all his heart and courage.
On June 11, 1982, five Israeli soldiers went missing in a battle with Syrian and Palestinian forces near the Lebanese village of Sultan Yaqub. Several years later, two of the captured soldiers were returned to Israel in prisoner exchanges with Syria and Achmed Jibril's PFLP-GC (Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command). Three soldiers -- Zachary Baumel, Yehuda Katz, and Tzvi Feldman -- are still missing.
